Handpicked on March 24th our Merlot came off at a pleasing 24.0 brix where it was then de stemmed and put into small open topped fermenters. The wine was gently plunged and pumped over throughout fermentation to aid flavour and colour extraction. After spending sufficient time on skins the wine was pressed off into barrel. The wine was aged for over 10 months in fine French oak until being bottled in March of 2014
Our 2013 Reserve Merlot is a barrel selection of our finest Merlot and has 42% new oak in the blend. It has intense aromatics of black doris plum, fruits of the forest with hints of chocolate and cigar box. Fruit cake and dark chocolate flavours fill out the mouth while solid tannins from both the fruit and the oak provide a rich and bold structure to the wine. Would go great with a big fat juicy rare steak! A fine example of Gimblett Gravels Merlot from Hawke’s Bay.
