The Levels Chardonnay is a barrel selection blend of our finest Mendoza clone Chardonnay from the Levels Vineyard at Te Awanga. Picked on the 20th & 23rd of March the grapes were whole bunch pressed into tank to cool overnight. The juice was then pumped into French oak barrels to undergo fermentation at around 20°C. The wine was stirred weekly post ferment for around 10 months. In January of 2014 we tasted every barrel to determine which barrels would make our Levels Chardonnay. The wine has 60% new oak which is higher than we would normally go with new barrels but the intensity of flavour in this wine envelops the oak characters and results in a nicely integrated, balanced and complex wine.
The wine is a brilliant deep golden colour with a pungent intensity on the nose exhibiting stone fruit and spice. On the palate the wine is rich and concentrated with golden peach and ripe pineapple. The fine French oak and buttery characters from the 100% malo-lactic fermentation harmonize nicely with the fruit concentration resulting in a wonderfully intense Chardonnay. The Beach House Levels Chardonnay is a modern take on an old popular style of Chardonnay.
